Introduction
JOB HUNT - will manage your job search by collating all relevant
information into mini databases. You can record achievements, work history,
education and use this information to create CV's. A database of "ACTION"
words and phrases which can be pasted directly into your text will make
sure you use the right words in your CV. CV's can be stored as small text
files or in a database allowing CV's to be customised for each application.
Other databases will record executive briefings / letters, contacts,
agencies, job applications, interviews and interview questions/answers.
Databases allow a wide range of search options and can be merged with text
files for mail shots and labels. All databases support CUT/PASTE/COPY
between each other and the text editor and can be password protected. Text
can also be imported into databases. Other features include Hypertext Help,
Interview/CV tips, Calculator, Calendar and mouse support.
Even if you are not currently seeking another job HUNT is useful for keeping
your CV up to date, general mail merge, as well as maintaining a contacts
database for future reference.
JOB HUNT is also suitable for self employed contract workers.

Job hunting is a skill which few of us have to practise very often and, like
any other skill which is not used it can get rusty. By using JOB HUNT you
can coordinate your search as well as brushing up / learning these skills.
You want or need another job. You look through the classified adverts in
the newspaper, but you find there are no adverts for jobs that require your
skills, what do you do?
panic - NO, PLAN. You have to get as much information as you can. This is
normally scribbled onto scraps of paper and put into a folder - but now you
can also enter it into JOB HUNT and store it on a floppy disk. Remember that
information you gather now may also be relevant in 10 years time.
JOB HUNT will help you record :-
CONTACTS People you have met in the past may be well placed to hear
of actual or impending opportunities.
PROSPECTS Build a list of target companies for a mailshot.
FOLLOW UP Record company details requiring follow up action
AGENCIES You can find details from the phone book. Record the date
when you approached them and how many interviews you get.
APPLICATIONS You will be surprised at the delays which sometimes occur
before you receive a reply or an invitation to interview.
Don't rely on your memory - record when you applied, and
which file your CV was generated from.
INTERVIEWS Learn from every interview - record what went well and
more importantly what didn't. Record questions and
answers.
QUESTIONS Store questions you may be asked - along with a suitable
answer (or answers). Make a note of any memorable
questions asked in a interview, and whether you could have
improved your answer(s).
ACHIEVEMENTS The achievements database will help you record and
identify your achievements. Once entered they can be
called up, copied to the clipboard and then pasted to a CV
file.
HEADER PAGES This database can store header pages for faxes and
letters. These can be "pasted" to the clipboard and copied
to your CV or letter files .
EXECUTIVE BRIEFINGS The executive briefing is part of a covering letter
that accompanies your CV in response to a job
advert. Its purpose is to highlight your skills in
relation to the requirements of the job as specified
in the job advert.
EDUCATION This is used to store details of your education,
qualifications and training. Once entered the data can be
pasted (via the clipboard) to your CV file whenever you

need it.
WORK EXPERIENCE Store your work experience details for each job
position you have held. This data can then be copied
to other parts of the application when required.
ACTION WORDS A list of "ACTION" words that can help write your
achievements.
PHRASES Record commonly used phrases.
FUNCTIONAL CV, CHRONOLOGICAL CV, PERFORMANCE CV:
All store CV outlines in different formats.
Are you a salesperson?.
You are now - with a unique product with income potential of £500000
upwards. What is this amazing product - well actually its yourself and that
is how you must think while Job Hunting. Your CV is a sales brochure. An
interview is a sales presentation and you have got to sell yourself. Your
job hunt is a full marketing campaign. You must identify what your customers
(potential employer) is looking for, how you can satisfy this need, what
your unique selling propositions (achievements) are and how to reach your
targets.
There are several ways to reach your potential employer.
1)Job Agencies - addresses can be found from your local telephone directory.
2)Adverts - local and national press as well as specialist recruitment
papers.
3)Personal contacts and referrals.
4)Mailshot to selected companies. Trade and business directories can be
found in larger libraries.
At the time of writing unemployment is over 3 million in the UK and all of
the above methods must be used. Remember that only 10% to 25% of jobs are
ever advertised.

Co-ordinating your JOB HUNT.
I cannot exactly tell you how best to use JOB HUNT as I do not know your
circumstances but here are some ideas - more information is contained in the
help system. There are lots of books available at libraries and bookshops to
help you write CV's and it may be worth looking at these. There are also
other programs which will generate CV's from replies to questions but
remember that if people with similar skills use these programs the CV's
generated must be very similar.
If you are in work - but not actively seeking a change.
Store names and address of people that may be able to help you in the future

The CV ( curriculum vitae) or Resume.
A CV lists all your attributes, achievements and qualifications that a
potential employer can use to asses your suitability for an interview.
Unfortunately, in the real world your CV will probably be used to reject
your application - experts suggest that a reader of a CV will only spend 20
seconds scanning a CV. If the "right" words are not present then your CV
goes on the reject pile. Systems are already available that scan a CV
electronically and look for key "action" words - not enough words = reject
pile. Think about what the person screening the CV's wants to see - what
would you want to read?
Use the ACTION word list to add zip to your CV.
If a job advert generates 400 CV's - will yours stand out.

JOB HUNT will help you to write your CV :-
The multi window text editor with online help will allow you to create lots
of small text files or multiple database entries that can be combined to
generate a CV that is specific to a particular area of your work. Because it
is a text editor you can import your CV file into a wordprocessor / DTP
system to give it the final touches. Action words and phrases can be pasted
into your text and data from all other databases can be used in your CV
creation.
JOB HUNT via its help system is full of information that should improve your
chances of getting that job.
Executive Briefing
The executive briefing is part of a covering letter that accompanies your CV
in response to a job advert. Its purpose is to highlight your skills in
relation to the requirements of the job as specified in the job advert.
Firstly you must highlight what the employer is specifically interested
looking for. Things like "must have 8 - 10 years business experience" or
"good working knowledge of computers". Once you have a list - you then need
to list how your skills, abilities, experience and achievements satisfy the
employers needs.
eg. after the standard introduction add your list.
Your requirements My Skills
1) 8 - 10 years business experience 12 years working in
manufacturing industry
including 4 years as
business development
manager.
2) good working knowledge of computers Developed business models
using PC based spreadsheet .
The benefit of the executive briefing is that the prospective employer does
not have to wade through a CV trying to find skills that match his/her
needs.
Using the executive briefing database, you can create your lists for each
application and then copy it (paste) to the clipboard and then
to your cover letter.
User Interface

menu items also offer dialog boxes and pick lists.

menu bar is active you will see a highlighted menu option; this is the
currently selected menu. Some options are unavailable in certain contexts,

Dialog Boxes
Dialog boxes are special windows. They cannot be resized and have normally
have the focus of the program - that is, all keypresses and mouse events are
directed to the Dialog Box, which is described as MODAL and can be closed by
pressing the ESC key or ALT - F3. There is another type of Dialog Box which
is Non Modal. A Non Modal does not grab mouse and keyboard events, unless
the Dialog box can process the event and cannot be closed by pressing ESC.
This allows multiple Non Modal dialog boxes to be displayed on the Desktop -
selected by clicking or pressing F6 to select the next window.
The example dialog box below has 3 standard action buttons:
Yes,No, and Cancel.
The TAB key can be used to cycle through the options - pressing
enter will select the highlighted option.
One button will normally be the default option and can be selected
by pressing enter.
┌─┴─┐ You can also use a mouse to select the dialog option.

DATABASES
An important part of Job hunting is to record the 5 W's, namely
WHO, WHERE, WHEN, WHAT and WHY.
Some examples of the 5 W's.
WHO
- do I know that can get me a job
- do I have an interview with
- is the personnel officer
WHERE is the location of the WHO's
WHEN
- is the interview
- was the last contact I had with company/contact X
- did I leave school
WHAT
- does the company do
- is my experience
- did I achieve
- are my qualifications
WHY
- do I want the job
- didn't I get the job
To record this information JOB HUNT has mini databases. The capacity of each
is dependent on the amount of memory available. To find out how many records
will fit into a database, clear the desktop load the database and use the
statistics button.

printing. The Merge button will display the range/selection dialog -
this allows you to set the search criteria and will find all the
matching forms. A file dialog will then prompt for the file name to
merge with.
[ STATISTICS ]
The data-base must fit into the available memory. The statistics box
will display the number of records, the amount of free memory and the
potential number of records that can be added.
Range / Selection dialog
The range / selection dialog is used for the FIND, PRINT and form print and
is used for 3 purposes.
1) Entering selection criteria for searching.
2) Selecting fields that are not for printing.
3) Add constant text to fields that contain data.
Entering Range Selection
It is possible to search for matching entries based on the data entered into
this dialog. E.g. you could find all records with a certain dialling code or
post code. To allow range selection, each input line will understand the
following operators.
= < > <= >= ? *
= means equal - as in = 021???????? will find all Birmingham telephone
codes.
> means greater than - as in > FFFFFFF will find all entries above
FFFFFF
< means less than - as in <HHHHHHH will find all entries less than
HHHHHHHH
<= and >= are less/greater than or equal ? wild character means match
any character
* variable length wild characters and only appears at the end of the
selection.
Note : It is not possible to search on memo (note) Fields which have
scroll bars.
Examples ...
to find all companies starting will A - move to the company field and enter
Contact Jim Sharman 114 Morley Rd, Ward End, Birmingham B8 2HX, UK. Page 15
JOB HUNT Version 2.07 (c) Copyright 1991..93 W.J. Sharman
= A* to find all records with Birmingham area prefix codes move to the phone
field and enter = 021*
Note if you enter = 021 only fields which have 021 and no more will be
found as equal looks for an exact match.
To find a range enter 2 selection operators - like <F* >K* will find all
entries for A to E and L to Z - you can not have 2 equal operators.
Date search
If the form has a date field you can enter a range to search. IE. to find
all records with a date before the 01/06/93 you would enter <01/06/93. The
date search is a special case. When the system detects a date separator / it
transposes the date to give a valid number. For example, 21/6/93 will become
93/6/21 - in this way valid searches can be done. You must enter all the
date (Day Month Year) and in the same format as it is stored - if you use
the format 21/6/1993 it is no good entering 21/6/93.
Wild character
To find Smith or Smyth enter =SM?TH - this will find all records starting
with SM and ending in TH the ? means any character.
You can do multi field matches - with only records that pass all selections
are used. To find all Smiths with a Birmingham telephone number enter =
SMITH in the name field and = 021* in the phone
field.
You can stop note fields by entering - as the first character.
Field selection
When printing, by default all fields are used. To stop a field being printed
enter a - (minus) as the first character in the field. The field can still
be used for range settings.
eg - =021* will find B'ham codes but not print it.
This is useful to stop the NOTES field being printed.
Constant Text - only for mailmerge or labels.
Some times you will require text to be printed only if the particular field
has data. Eg. If you were creating labels or a mailmerge, you may place the
address at the start of the label and on the last line F.A.O (For the
Attention Of) followed by the name.
Eg you may want a label like this.
Label definition Resulting output
~C#################### ABC SOFTWARE
~1#################### 123 ABC STREET
~T#################### LONDON
~P######### WC1 2QW
F.A.O. ~N########### F.A.O.
The problem is, that if you do not have data in the field (in this case
NAME) then the text is printed with no data. To overcome this you can enter
CONSTANT text (like F.A.O. or ATTN: ) by moving to the field that follows
the constant text (NAME is this case) and type the word (F.A.O. or whatever)
into field. This must be the only data entered.

■ Password
■ Input masks
2-Show
The show option is used to show the field identifiers which are used to
position fields in a text file which will be used in a database merge.
SEE ALSO MAILMERGE SECTION
3-IN/OUT
This option is used for Import and Export of data
Import
This will read a text file and create new form entries. The file
must have a line for each field in the form and must be in the TAB order of
the fields in the dialog. Where multiple lines are to be input
into a notes field (one with a scroll bar) the lines must be prefixed with
an ! except for the last line - this will cause the next line to be read and
placed in the next field.
Export
The export option will create text file with records that match the
selection criteria entered into the range/select dialog and all fields
except those marked with a - as the first character. It is used to transfer
information between form databases.
Editing the Password
Each database form is protected by a password ( can be different for each
database). This password can be altered and initially will not be displayed
until you edit the password. Please remember, once entered it will not be
possible to access the data without the password.
Select 1-edit from the internal menu then Password. This will display a

dialog box into which the new password can be entered. Select OK or press
enter to accept the new password or cancel to revert to the previous
password.
Input masks
Some fields such as telephone fields can have a mask which, for example will
only allow numbers to be entered. The picture mask can be changed but should
be done before the database is used. For more information on picture masks
please consult the mailmerge section of this manual.
Database form
The forms for each database are different, but all work the same way. Single
line entry fields use various editing keys such as arrow keys, Del,
Backspace etc whereas memo fields (normally labelled NOTES) are limited size
editors.
Notes field
The NOTES field has all the operational characteristics of the CV editor
detailed below. Data can be transferred between the NOTES field and the CV
editor in both directions by using the clipboard.
[ Copy ]
When a form has a Copy button it allows all the field data to be copied to
the clipboard. The data in the clipboard can then be edited and pasted into
your CV document or other database.
[ Print ]
Print the form - a selection dialog may be displayed allowing certain fields
not to be printed by placing a - in the first position of the field you
don't want.

Form Codes.
Some data entry forms have a CODE field - in the agency form there is an
AGENCY CODE field and in others a CONTACT CODE. The fields can be used for
your own codes which can then be used for selecting different agencies or
contacts.
EXAMPLES -
The CONTACT code in the contacts database could be used to record whether
the contact is Business or Personal, How many employees they employee and
what the company turnover is. The codes could be B for business, P for
personal so the first character could be a B or P, the next 2 characters can
be for tens of employees I.E 01 = 1 to 10 employees 02 11-20 employees etc.
The next 3 digits could be for turnover in tens of thousands of pounds E.G.
001 = 0 to £10000
100 = £1000,000.
So a business contact working for a company with 100 employees and a
turnover of 4 million pounds could be recorded as B10400.
The Sort/Range dialog box displayed for FIND and MERGE operations can be
used for searching on this code. So to FIND all business contacts working
for companies with between 50 and 200 employee irrespective of turnover you
would move to the code field and type >=B05* <=B20* the * is means match
ANY trailing characters.
CV EDITOR
The CV Editor is a simple text editor. It creates a standard text file which
can be printed, used by a Desktop Publishing system or sent to a
professional CV service for printing. Text can be can be imported from and
exported to some fields in the various databases via the Clipboard.
It defaults to the file extension .CVF for CVfile but this can be
overridden. Pressing F1 or selecting the HINTS menu option will give you
hints on writing your CV.
Contact Jim Sharman 114 Morley Rd, Ward End, Birmingham B8 2HX, UK. Page 19
JOB HUNT Version 2.07 (c) Copyright 1991..93 W.J. Sharman
Note: The editor can edit all text based files - not just CV's.
The CLIPBOARD
The clipboard is a special text editor which is used for temporary storage
and copying data between different objects on the desktop.
A simple operation is to highlight a block of text in the CV editor by
either holding down the shift key and using the arrow keys to highlight or
double click the mouse and then move to highlight the text. By pressing the
Ctrl key and the INS key the highlighted text will be copied to the
clipboard. Text from the clipboard can then be "pasted" somewhere else in
the text file or to a different file.
Form data and the clipboard.
Some database forms have a "Notes" field which is actually a mini editor -
text can be copied to and from the clipboard. Some forms have a "Paste"
button which will copy all the data (not just the NOTES) from the form to
the clipboard.
Action words and phrases
The action word list contains words that convey 'action', 'achievement',
'energy' and 'doing'. Words can be deleted or added to match your
background. Action words can be used in the CV editor and in the notes
fields of databases.
Using action words
Activate the list from the ACTION menu option. Use the up/down arrow keys or
click on the scroll bar to view the list. View the words looking for one
that around which a phrase can be built that will emphasize a positive
attribute or achievement. When the word has been found press enter or click
on the paste button to insert the word into your text. You must have an
editor window open or the cursor in the notes field of a database form. Use
the NEXT button or F6 to move between the list and editable field. To avoid
confusion only have either an editor window or notes field active at one
time.
Using action phrases
Activate the list from the ACTION menu option. Use the up/down arrow keys or
click on the scroll bar to view the list. Phrases should be built from your
own background of achievements. View the phrases looking for one that will
emphasize a positive attribute or achievement. When the phrase has been
found press enter or click on the paste button to insert the word into your
text. You must have an editor window open or the cursor in the notes field
of a database form. Use the NEXT button or F6 to move between the list and
editable field. To avoid confusion only have either an editor window or
notes field active at one time.

Embedded Printer Codes
Files that are printed using the FILE|PRINT A FILE menu option or as a
result of a merge operation can have printer control strings within the
file. These set-up strings can control print mode, font selection etc
The set-up strings will depend on your printer (refer to your printer
manual). Most set-up strings will require an ASCII control code such as
ESCape. To enter the code use the backslash character \ followed by the 3
digit code decimal ASCII code.
EG ESC would be represented by \027 and Ctrl-L by \012.
Combinations of strings can be sent - but no spaces must be used between the
commands.
EG for an Epson FX printer to select Near Letter Quality with emphasised
mode the string would be
\027x1\027E
The reset command is sent after printing is completed to cancel the commands
sent by the setup string.
For an Epson printer this will be \027@
The code string must be on its own line, starting at the first character
position (extreme left) and is identified with the PIPE character | (located
normally bottom left of Keyboard).
E.g. to set an Epson compatible printer to print in ITALICS you would have
the following line:
|\027\052
This is italic.
|\027\053
Contact Jim Sharman 114 Morley Rd, Ward End, Birmingham B8 2HX, UK. Page 23

At the end of the file you should have reset string to return the printer to
normal operation.
MailMerge introduction
A mailmerge is the combination of a data from a database with a letter.
Normally the data base holds the addresses of the recipients of the letter
and when merged the address is substituted into the letter at the specified
position. In order to position the field information, each field has a code
(which can be edited) and this code is used to identify where the
information is to be placed - it does not specify how much data is to be
placed. To specify the width, the code is followed by letters to determine
the width,
Eg if the field identifier is ~N and you want a maximum of 20
characters you would enter ~NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (it did not have to be
AAAA - but must be a letter not a space).
An example merge letter could look like this.
114 Morley Road
Ward End
Birmingham B8 2HX
~NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
~1AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
~2AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
~3AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
~TAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
~PAAAAA
Dear ~SAAAAAAAAAAA,
For each record in the database the data contained in the field is
substituted at the position specified producing a large text file, This
could be printed or imported into a wordprocessor or desktop publishing
program.
As well as using data from the database it is possible to define REPLACEABLE
fields. These fields prompt the user to enter text that will then be
substituted into the letter
The MERGE FILE
The merge file can be created from within JOB HUNT using the CV editor. The
purpose of the file is to contain the text of the letter and define which
fields from the database should be used and where to position the data from
these fields. The file can be formatted for a Desktop Publishing system -
see the appendix for more information.
Normally a merge file is only used with a single data-base and most
databases support merging.
Merge Field dialog

Each data-base that supports merge has the option to display a dialog that
contains a list showing all the mergeable fields. By double clicking on a
field or highlighting the field and selecting the Paste button will display
another dialog into which you enter the width of the field -
selecting OK or pressing enter will insert the merge code (padded to the
specified width) into an opened text file.
Creating a Merge file
First, select the data-base from the data-base menu.
Open an existing file or a new file from the CV menu.
Use the SHOW option on the internal menu of the database list.
Type in your text.
Position your field identifiers by moving the cursor to the starting
position - select the field from the merge field dialog and then enter the
width of the field.
Replaceable fields can also be added - see replaceable fields.

Merging a database
To perform a merge you need a database and a merge file.
Select the data-base from the Database menu and TAB to or click on the MERGE
button. The Range/Select dialog will be displayed - allowing you to select a
range of data. Click on OK to continue. A file selection dialog will then be
displayed from which you must select you merge file.
Once selected an editor will be displayed and the merge file will first be
scanned for replaceable fields.
If any replaceable fields are defined you will be prompted for all the
fields. The data-base is then scanned for records that match the entries
specified in range/selection dialog. The data from any matching records is
substituted into the editor at the specified field locations creating a file
with the filename of the merge file selected but with an extension of .MRG.
At the end of the merge, the file will be printed (provided the printer is
online). The original merge file is left unaltered.

Editing merge codes
The pre-defined merge codes use a ~ followed by the short cut letter of the
field. eg ~C which will give a field width of 2. You can edit these field
identifiers assigning string upto 10 characters. The string selected must be
unique to each field and should not be confused with normal text that may
occur in a letter, for example if you change the field ID to "THE" it is
quite obvious that any occurrence of the word "THE" will be replaced. Select
OK to save the changes or cancel to abort.
Replaceable fields
Replaceable fields are special codes that can be entered into a text file
that when processed will display a dialog box prompting for text that will
replace the field code.
Eg The code is ~# (extra #### define the maximum width)
Dear ~###############,
I am writing in response to your advertisement in the
~################################.
In the above letter you would be prompted for the text to follow Dear and
after " in the ". The result might look like this.
Dear Sir,
I am writing in response to your advertisement in the Daily Telegraph.
The input line into which you type your replacement text will adjust its
length to show how many characters can be entered.
You must delete the text in the dialog box otherwise it will be inserted
into your text.

Replaceable fields - justification.
The number of characters in the field identifier defines the maximum number
of characters that can be entered. However, the text that you enter may not
always fill the maximum and could lead to odd looking
text.
eg. if you had the following lines

for the position of ~################# and enclose my CV>
if you entered "SUN" your text would look like this...

To overcome this problem the prompt dialog allows you to specify

Right Justify will place the text at the right - like this

Replaceable prompts with Picture validation input
Picture validators compare the input string typed by the user with a picture
or template that describes the format of valid input. By using a picture it
is possible to offer advanced input routines which can accept telephone
numbers, social security number or choice inputs for example.
To identify a replaceable picture prompt use ~@ .
E.g. ~@###-###_#### any spaces that would normally be used must be
replaced with an underscore character _ because a space is used to identify
the end of the prompt field.
NOTE : The end of the field must have a space after it to identify the end
of the field. The common mistake is include a period (.) in the string. The
result is the period (.) is lost.
Eg. Dear ~@AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ,
The comma is separated from the string with a space.
The picture is built using special characters detailed below:
Match characters
# Accept only a digit
? Accept only a letter (upper or lower case)
& Accept only a letter, convert to upper case
@ Accept any character
! Accept any character - convert to upper case
other characters are taken literally
Special characters
; Take next char literally
* Repetition count

{} Grouping - used in options eg [C{ash,heque}}
, Set of alternatives.
Examples - the ~@ prefix is omitted for clarity.
Date input
#[#]/#[#]/##[#][#] by using the [] we have optional 1 or 2 digit
number and a 2,3 or 4 digit year- the slash characters are filled in
automatically and would give inputs like
1/1/93 1/1/1993 12/1/93 12/01/1993

Printing labels
The merge option can also print labels. It is exactly the same processes
per the mailmerge but requires a specific format of text file to merge with.
It is necessary to position the field identifiers and to instruct the merge
editor how many labels across are to be used. The commands @LABEL1, @LABEL2
or @LABEL3 must be placed on the first line - this will be deleted during
the merge, If more than one label across is being used it is necessary to
indicate all the positions as follows:
@LABEL2
~CXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ~CXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
~1XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ~1XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
~2XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ~2XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
~3XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ~3XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
~TXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ~TXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

positions.

JOB HUNT Version 2.07 (c) Copyright 1991..93 W.J. Sharman
Extra lines must be added after the last identifier to take into account the
gaps between labels. To check the position of labels print out on plain
paper and compare the position with a page of labels. By varying the
positions of the field identifiers and adding lines it should be possible to
print on single sheets of labels and continuous labels alike. When empty
fields are found, Job Hunt will shuffle the blank lines to the end of the
label to maintain the print format.
Replaceable fields can also be used.
Printing envelopes
Printing envelopes is the same as for a standard mailmerge. The field
identifiers need to be positioned in the centre of the page and a page break
added to eject the envelope. Replaceable fields can used to enter Ist or 2nd
class.
Don't forget to place a PAGE BREAK after the text of the label to cause the
envelope to eject.
Problems may be encountered if you have empty fields, causing data to be
incorrectly aligned. The solution is to place @LABEL1 at the top of the page
causing the text to be treated as a label.
E.g. In this example a replaceable picture field is used to select
either First or Second class enter F or S to fill.
~@[First,Second] Class
~SXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
~1XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
~2XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
~3XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Notes for users with HP DESKJET 500.
If using DESKJET printer with manual envelope feed you can put an embedded
printer control string in the merge file to feed the envelope. This will
cause the printer to load an envelope rather than feeding paper. Insert your
envelope as per Deskjet instructions and press the STATUS button. The
envelope will feed in a be printed. Repeat the process until all your
envelopes are printed.
The command is as follows :
|\027\038\108\051\072
MailMerge and label printing - Empty fields.
Because of the free form nature of the mailmerge and label printing IE you
can place fields wherever you want - not where you are told, problem may be
encountered with formatting. The may problem will be when fields are used
that have no data. These fields would therefore leave an empty space. This
does not look good on letters and labels. The program will attempt to remove
empty fields. When generating a mailmerge, if a field is specified but has
no data, the field code will be deleted from the start of the code to the
next text or line feed. So when placing fields to be used as an address it
is recommended to place on the left hand of the page with no other text like

Dear Sir,
With labels, empty fields with be moved to the end of the label to maintain
the correct position but without empty spaces. This assumes that the fields
are used in the order they are stored in the database form. If fields are
specified in a different order, empty fields will be cleared and there may
be gaps - generally this does not happen as the database form is in a
logical format to start with.
Please feel free to experiment.

Appendix A - Mail Merge with Ventura and wordprocessors.
Mail Merge with Ventura Publisher and DTP/Wordprocessor.
The merge capability of Job Hunt allows the field identifiers of the
database to be freely mixed with other text. This allows documents that
contain formatting information for Desktop Publishing or Wordprocessing can
be used as the basis of a mailmerge and produce a high quality mailing.
This is a significant advantage over systems that just print the data from
the database followed by the contents of the letter.
The following example shows how to use Job Hunt with Ventura Publisher. It
assumes you are familiar with Job Hunt, Ventura and mailmerge in general.
Job Hunt and Ventura merge.
1) Create the merge file containing the text of your letter and the field
identifiers as outlined in the MAILMERGE section of the manual.
2)Load the file into Ventura as an 8 bit ascii file.
3)Load a suitable style sheet and format the loaded file and save.
4)Open the required database in Job Hunt and select the merge option
specifying the formatted file as the merge file.
5)The resulting file of the merge will have an extension of .MRG (or .~RG)
and should be loaded into ventura as a GENERATED file.
6)The loaded file should be a list of letters - all formatted, which can be
printed out.

Appendix C Configuring and Running Job Hunt 386
JOB HUNT 386 uses DOS extender technology developed by BORLAND
INTERNATIONAL.
Running Job Hunt 386 - a DOS Protected-Mode Program
When you run Job Hunt 386, you must ensure that DPMI16BI.OVL (the DPMI
server) and RTM.EXE (the run-time manager) are present in the current
directory, the same directory as JH386, or on the DOS path.
Protected Mode and Memory
A DOS protected-mode program uses DPMI (DOS Protected Mode Interface) to run
in protected mode which gives the application access to all your computer's
memory. With the exceptions outlined below, the DOS protected-mode
technology is completely transparent and no extra steps are necessary in
order to run a protected-mode application.
DPMIINST
One such exception might be when you run a protected-mode program for the
very first time on a 286-based system. The protected mode technology uses an
internal database which contains various machine characteristics to
determine how to enable protected mode operation on your system, and
configures itself accordingly. If you have a computer with an older 80286
microprocessor, your system might not be recognized. You'll see this message
when you try to run a protected-mode application:
Machine not in database (RUN DPMIINST)
If you get this message, simply run the DPMIINST program by typing DPMIINST
at the DOS prompt and following the program's instructions.
Contact Jim Sharman 114 Morley Rd, Ward End, Birmingham B8 2HX, UK. Page 40
JOB HUNT Version 2.07 (c) Copyright 1991..93 W.J. Sharman
DPMIINST runs your machine through a series of tests to determine the best
way of enabling protected mode, and automatically configures accordingly.
Once you have run DPMIINST, you won't have to run it again.
Some memory managers, device drivers, and memory-resident (TSR) programs can
interfere with DPMIINST's ability to analyze your system. If DPMIINST fails,
try temporarily disabling or removing these programs. That gives DPMIINST
the unrestricted access it needs to determine the best way to enter
protected mode.
Note that running DPMIINST.EXE will never be required on any system running
HIMEM (or equivalent) or on any system based on an 80386 (or later)
processor.
DPMIMEM
By default, the DPMI interface allocates all available extended memory for
its own use. If you don't want all of the available memory to be taken by
the DPMI kernel, you can set a DOS environment variable to specify the
maximum amount of memory to use. This variable can be entered directly at
the DOS prompt or inserted in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, using this syntax:
SET DPMIMEM=MAXMEM nnnn
where nnnn is the amount of memory in kilobytes.
For example, if you have a system with 4MB and want the DPMI kernel to use
only 2MB of it, leaving the other 2MB alone, the DPMIMEM variable would be
set as follows:
SET DPMIMEM=MAXMEM 2048
Some memory managers, like QEMM or 386^Max, allow allocating the same area
of memory as either extended or expanded and many older applications can use
only expanded memory (EMS). By using the DPMIMEM DOS environment variable to
limit the amount of extended memory used by the DPMI server, your system
will still have expanded memory available for use by older applications.
RTMRES
RTMRES preloads the protected-mode system. Preloading the DPMI server lets
you load a protected-mode program slightly faster. RTMRES will start a
program if you specify a program name as a parameter. If no parameter is
specified, RTMRES will run a DOS shell. Type EXIT to close the shell.
RTMRES is especially useful if you start, exit, and start a protected-mode
program frequently. Normally, every time you run a protected-mode
application, the DPMI server is loaded. If you've run RTMRES previously, the
server is already present, and the protected-mode application loads faster.
EXTENDED MEMORY
A protected-mode application interacts with the DPMI server through
Borland's run-time manager (RTM.EXE). By default, a protected-mode

application uses all the extended memory reserved by the DPMI kernel.
Running Job Hunt 386 from Windows
A DOS protected-mode program will run in Windows in 386 enhanced
mode. To configure the amount of memory available to the
application, create a Windows PIF file. To learn more about PIF
files, see your Microsoft Windows User's Guide.
Running Job Hunt 386 in Windows Standard Mode
In order to run a protected-mode program from Windows
standard-mode, you must set the DPMIMEM DOS environment variable
and run RTMRES (both are described above) before running Windows.
Make sure your DPMIMEM setting leaves enough physical memory for
Windows to operate.
Note that once you've run RTMRES, you won't be able to run
Windows in 386 enhanced mode until you exit the RTMRES shell (by
typing EXIT at a DOS prompt).
Running from a Windows DOS Prompt
To run Job Hunt 386 from a Windows DOS prompt, you must first modify the
DOSPRMPT.PIF file found in your Windows directory so that the protected-mode
program will be able to use extended memory.
Using the Windows PIF editor, open the DOSPRMPT.PIF file, and indicate the
amount of extended memory you want the protected-mode program to use. If you
are unsure how to use the PIF editor, see your Microsoft Windows User's
Guide.
Controlling the Amount of Memory the Run-Time Manager Uses
The run-time manager attempts to free as much conventional memory as
possible (by moving moveable memory blocks into extended memory, for
example) before starting an application. No attempt is made to release
extended memory, however. Therefore, if you are going to run other
protected-mode applications that don't use the run-time manager (Paradox
4.0, for example), use the RTM DOS environment variable to control the
run-time manager's allocation of memory.
Use the DOS command line to add the RTM environment variable to your
system's DOS environment. Here is the syntax:

SET RTM=[option nnnn]
The following table lists the options you can use. nnnn can be a decimal
number or a hex number in the form of xAB54 or xab54.
Option Description
-------------------------------------------------------------
EXTLEAVE nnnn Always leave at least nnnn kilobytes of
extended memory available. The default value
is 640K.
EXTMAX nnnn Don't allocate more than nnnn kilobytes of
extended memory. The default value is 4
gigabytes. In Windows, the default value is
one-half the available memory.
EXTMIN nnnn If fewer than nnnn kilobytes are available
after applying EXTMAX and EXTLEAVE limits,
terminate with an Out of Memory message. The
default value is zero.
REALLEAVE nnnn Always leave at least nnnn paragraphs of real
memory available. The default value is 64K or
4096 paragraphs.
REALMAX nnnn Don't allocate more than nnnn paragraphs of
real memory. The default value is 1 megabyte
or 65,535 paragraphs.
REALMIN nnnn If fewer than nnnn paragraphs are available
after applying REALMAX and REALLEAVE, terminate
with an Out of Memory message. The default
value is zero.
The following DOS command limits RTM to 2M bytes of extended memory, and
ensures that 128K bytes of real memory are left unallocated:
SET RTM=EXTMAX 2048 REALLEAVE 8192
Important Note for Borland C++ and Paradox 4.0 Users
The DPMILOAD.EXE and DPMI16BI.OVL files provided in this package replace the
older ones that came with Paradox 4.0 and BC++ 3.0 or later. Delete or
rename the older versions and make sure the newer ones are on your DOS path
(both Paradox and BC will search the path and find the newer versions).
If you plan to shell out from Paradox or BC++ to run another protected-mode
application, first limit the amount of extended memory used by Paradox or
BC++. For Paradox, use its /extk command-line parameter; and for BC++, use
its /x command-line parameter. Refer to the Paradox or BC++ documentation
for more information on the use of command-line options.
